MSF Warns Ebola Outbreak in Eastern DR Congo Outpacing Response Efforts

(MENAFN) The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading more quickly than the response measures aimed at containing it, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned on Saturday, highlighting significant gaps in testing capacity and logistical support.

In a statement issued during a visit to Bunia by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, MSF described the situation in Ituri Province as “deeply alarming,” noting that the outbreak appears to be progressing unusually rapidly compared with previous Ebola incidents.

Dr. Alan Gonzalez, MSF deputy director of operations, said: “Never before has an Ebola disease outbreak recorded so many cases so soon after its declaration.”

According to MSF, hundreds of suspected samples have yet to be tested, while restrictions affecting borders and airports are slowing the delivery of essential medical supplies and limiting the deployment of specialized response teams.

“The reality today is that nobody knows the true scale and severity of this outbreak,” Gonzalez added, stressing that incomplete data is complicating efforts to assess and control the spread of the disease.
