Ukraine Accuses Russia of Continuing Strikes Despite Declared Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Ukraine said Wednesday that Russian attacks continued overnight despite a unilateral ceasefire that officially came into effect at midnight earlier this week, according to statements from Ukrainian officials.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha claimed Russian forces launched a large-scale wave of aerial attacks after the truce began, including drone and missile strikes targeting several regions.

"Russian attacks with the use of 108 drones and three missiles continued throughout the night, including morning strikes on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia," he said in a statement on US social media company X.

According to reports, Sybiha criticized Moscow for failing to respond to Kyiv’s calls for a broader halt in fighting and urged Ukraine’s allies to increase pressure on Russia through additional sanctions and other measures.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine would observe a ceasefire beginning at midnight Tuesday (2100 GMT), as stated in a message posted on X.

The announcement came after Russia proposed suspending military operations on May 8-9 during Victory Day commemorations. Reports said the proposal was discussed during an April 29 phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

Responding to Moscow’s proposal, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had not received any formal request regarding the temporary truce, though he did not clarify whether Kyiv had officially communicated its own ceasefire proposal to Russia.
