Algeria Backs Mali’s Unity, Denounces All Forms of Terrorism

(MENAFN) Algeria has reiterated its backing for Mali’s national unity following a recent wave of armed attacks targeting military installations, while also strongly condemning all forms of terrorism, according to official remarks on Monday.

Speaking through an Algeria’s broadcaster, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed what he described as a consistent national stance in support of Mali’s “unity, land, people, and institutions,” as stated by reports.

He stressed that Algeria rejects terrorism in all its forms and expressions, insisting that it cannot be justified or accepted under any circumstances.

“Algeria categorically rejects all forms and manifestations of terrorism, which cannot be justified or tolerated under any circumstances,” he said.

Attaf also highlighted the importance of reinforcing internal cohesion within Mali, describing it as the strongest safeguard against extremist violence and a key factor in maintaining stability in the country.

He further characterized national unity as the most effective defense mechanism against terrorist threats and broader instability risks.

Relations between Algeria and Mali have been tense for over two years, particularly after Mali’s military leadership withdrew from the 2015 Algiers Peace Agreement, which had aimed to stabilize the country’s conflict-ridden north.

Separately, Malian authorities confirmed on Sunday that the defense minister died in hospital from injuries sustained in an attack on his residence.

According to an official statement, a suicide attacker drove a vehicle filled with explosives and detonated it near the minister’s home in Kati, a major military town close to Bamako.
