Over Eighty Civilians Killed in Suspected ADF Attacks in Eastern DR Congo

(MENAFN) At least 87 civilians were killed in March in a series of attacks attributed to suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

As stated by reports, the violence occurred in villages across Ituri province, particularly in Mambasa territory, affecting the health zones of Nia-nia and Lolwa. The attacks also triggered large-scale displacement, forcing more than 60,000 people to flee to other areas considered safer within Mambasa and into neighboring Tshopo province.

The humanitarian impact extended beyond casualties and displacement. OCHA reported that 23 schools were closed due to insecurity, disrupting the education of more than 5,400 children. In addition, nine health facilities suspended operations, leaving over 55,000 people without access to medical services.

Security forces have since increased operations in the region. The military said joint Congolese and Ugandan troops carried out operations in early April that resulted in the rescue of around 200 hostages.

Earlier, the Congolese army reported the destruction of four ADF strongholds in Mambasa territory, including what it described as the group’s headquarters, located roughly 165 kilometers from Bunia, the capital of Ituri province. Officials said several ADF fighters were killed during the offensive, including individuals identified as senior operatives.

The ADF, which has been active for years in eastern DR Congo, is linked to the Islamic State group (ISIS/Daesh), according to security assessments.

Since 2021, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have conducted joint military operations targeting ADF positions in an effort to curb the group’s attacks in the region.
