Mali Claims Major Victory After Repelling Nationwide Militant Attacks

(MENAFN) Malian armed forces reported killing over 200 militants across the country while also capturing large quantities of equipment, according to statements cited by reports from Chief of General Staff Oumar Diarra.

The announcement followed a series of coordinated assaults carried out a day earlier in multiple locations, including Bamako, Kati, Gao, Sevare, and Kidal. According to reports, responsibility for the attacks was claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin alongside the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front. The operations reportedly targeted military bases, essential infrastructure, and senior officials but were ultimately stopped by government forces.

“During the operation … the enemy was routed, and this response was consistent with the threats and attacks organized by the terrorists,” Diarra said, adding that “more than 200 terrorists were neutralized.”

Officials also confirmed that Defense Minister Sadio Camara died after sustaining injuries when a suicide car bomb struck his residence during the attacks.

In addition, the Africa Corps reported that it had supported Malian troops, stating that the assault “has been thwarted.”

The events triggered reactions from regional and international actors. Ibrahim Traore said the Alliance of Sahel States condemned what he described as “ignoble, cowardly, and barbaric acts” against a sovereign nation, stressing that such actions would not weaken the region’s determination to live “free, in peace, and with dignity.”

Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said it “strongly condemns” the incidents reported across Mali on April 25.

The Chinese Embassy in Mali stated that it “expresses its deep sorrow” over the death of Sadio Camara and “strongly condemns the terrorist attacks,” while offering “deepest condolences” to the victims.

Similarly, the Russian Embassy in Bamako described the assaults as “cowardly attacks” intended to destabilize the country, while the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed “deep concern,” warning that the incidents pose a “direct threat” to Mali’s stability.

According to reports, the Russian Foreign Ministry also indicated that preliminary findings suggest possible involvement of Western security services in training those responsible for the attacks.
