Hezbollah Claims Strikes on Israeli Forces in South Lebanon

(MENAFN) Hezbollah claimed responsibility Monday for a series of drone strikes targeting Israeli troops and military hardware across southern Lebanon, escalating tensions just days after a fragile ceasefire extension was brokered in Washington.

The Lebanese militant group announced in separate statements that its fighters struck an Israeli tank in the town of Al-Qantara, asserting a direct hit, and targeted an Israeli bulldozer in Bint Jbeil while it was allegedly demolishing civilian homes. Additionally, Hezbollah said it dispatched two drones against separate gatherings of Israeli soldiers in Naqoura, reporting confirmed casualties.

The group further released footage on Telegram purportedly documenting a Sunday drone strike in the town of Taybeh, showing the drone making direct contact with a military gathering. Hezbollah claimed the footage also included material captured from Israeli soldiers' own cameras, depicting the moment a helicopter was struck while descending to evacuate the wounded.

The group framed all of Monday's operations as a direct response to what it characterized as Israeli ceasefire violations, including strikes on southern villages and the systematic demolition of residential homes.

The Israeli military offered a notably restrained account, acknowledging that one Hezbollah drone detonated near its forces while a second was successfully intercepted — and stating that no casualties were sustained.

The escalation comes against a devastating humanitarian backdrop. According to Lebanese official figures, more than 2,500 people have been killed and upwards of 1.6 million displaced by Israeli strikes across Lebanon since March 2.

A 10-day ceasefire had been declared on April 17, though Tel Aviv was repeatedly accused of breaching it. On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to extend the truce by three weeks, following a second round of negotiations held in Washington.
