NPT Chief Warns Nuclear Non-Proliferation System Faces Challenging Time
“This review conference convenes at a particularly challenging time,” Ambassador Do Hung Viet told reporters. “It is quite clear that we are, in fact, in the most difficult time, the most challenging time for the NPT regime itself.”
Viet explained that ahead of the meeting, he had engaged in broad diplomatic efforts aimed at narrowing divisions and encouraging agreement among participating countries.
“In my capacity as president of the conference, I have been conducting extensive consultations with states parties and other stakeholders,” he said, pointing to a series of regional discussions held across Asia-Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
According to him, these consultations were designed to identify areas of shared interest and prepare the groundwork for negotiations, taking place amid rising geopolitical tensions that are complicating consensus-building efforts.
