UN Mission Calls for Cooperation to Stabilize Eastern DR Congo
During meetings with provincial authorities in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, MONUSCO chief James Swan emphasized the importance of collaboration between government institutions, security forces, UN personnel, humanitarian groups, and local communities to improve security conditions.
He reiterated that the UN mission remains committed to its mandate, with a primary focus on protecting civilians who continue to face threats from armed groups operating in the region.
“Civilian populations continue to be affected by the violence of armed groups, causing massive displacement and inter-community tensions,” he said.
Swan also noted that MONUSCO will continue working alongside Congolese forces to provide direct protection to displaced populations who remain vulnerable due to ongoing conflict.
He stressed that lasting stability will require a more coordinated approach involving all relevant actors, including national authorities and international partners.
His visit to eastern Congo marks his first field mission since assuming office, covering areas heavily affected by insecurity, including North Kivu and Ituri provinces.
Local officials also raised concerns about the continued activity of armed groups such as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which have been accused of serious abuses against civilians. A provincial assembly representative warned that the situation should not be treated as a purely internal matter and called for stronger monitoring of ceasefire arrangements and enhanced civilian protection measures.
