Lufthansa Cuts Summer Flights Amid Rising of Fuel Costs Rise
The German airline group said on Tuesday that it will remove around 20,000 short-haul flights from its summer timetable through October as part of efforts to control increased operational expenses. The adjustments are expected to reduce overall capacity by less than 1% in available seat kilometers (ASK), while saving more than 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel.
The cuts mainly affect less profitable short-distance routes operating from Frankfurt and Munich. At the same time, Lufthansa plans to expand selected services from other European hubs, including Zurich, Vienna, and Brussels, as part of a broader restructuring across its six main bases.
The airline said that an initial round of schedule adjustments has already been implemented through May 31, resulting in around 120 daily flight cancellations starting Tuesday. Affected passengers have been notified.
Several destinations have been temporarily removed from the schedule, including Bydgoszcz and Rzeszow in Poland, as well as Stavanger in Norway. In addition, about 10 routes are being consolidated through other Lufthansa Group hubs, affecting connections to cities such as Cork, Gdansk, Ljubljana, Rijeka, Sibiu, Stuttgart, Trondheim, Tivat, and Wroclaw.
Lufthansa stated that the changes are intended to improve overall efficiency across its European network while maintaining its long-haul international connectivity.
The group also said updated medium-term scheduling plans for the summer period will be released in late April or early May, with further possible adjustments to short-haul operations.
Despite the reductions, Lufthansa confirmed that its jet fuel supply remains secure for the coming weeks and that it is managing costs through a combination of procurement strategies and price hedging measures.
