Jordan Denounces Israeli Law Allowing Death Penalty for Palestinian Prisoners

(MENAFN) On Monday, Jordan strongly criticized a newly enacted Israeli law that permits the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, calling the measure a violation of international law and humanitarian standards.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ambassador Fouad Majali stated that Jordan rejects the legislation, describing it as a “racist, discriminatory and illegitimate” law. He emphasized that the law contravenes international legal norms, which prohibit an occupying power from imposing authority over occupied territories through unilateral measures.

Majali further said that the law is part of a broader Israeli policy aimed at the Palestinian people, undermining their inalienable rights, including “the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian territory under a two-state solution.”

He urged the international community to take swift action to prevent Israel from enforcing the legislation and to halt what he described as “illegal Israeli legislation and unilateral measures targeting the Palestinian people and their presence on their land.”

According to reports, Israel’s parliament approved the law earlier Monday in its second and third readings by 62 votes to 48. The legislation grants Israeli courts the authority to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly voting in favor.
