Mass Grave is Found in Western Kenya
This finding represents the third significant case of mass graves uncovered in the country in recent years. A previous incident in 2023 involved the exhumation of hundreds of bodies in Kilifi County, where over 400 individuals connected to a religious sect led by Paul Mackenzie reportedly died after being urged to starve themselves in order to “meet Jesus.”
In the latest case, investigators specializing in homicide cases uncovered the remains of eight adults and 25 children. In addition to these bodies, several dismembered human remains were also found. The excavation began after the graves were initially identified last Friday.
By Sunday, law enforcement officials stated that they had begun collecting testimonies from witnesses, having first secured the location to “preserve the integrity of potential evidence.”
A government pathologist, Richard Njoroge, provided further details on Thursday regarding the victims. Among the 25 children, examinations showed that eight were male and ten were female, while the gender of the remaining victims could not be identified. He also noted that the group included both newborns and fetuses.
“They were in various stages of decomposition. Only a few were fresh, the other ones were severely decomposed,” Njoroge said.
