ICE Agents May Stay at Airports Despite TSA Salary Payments

(MENAFN) U.S. airports could continue seeing a strong presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers even after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees begin receiving back pay later this week.

White House Border Czar Tom Homan told media on Sunday that the ongoing deployment of ICE personnel hinges on TSA staff returning to duty, emphasizing that “ICE is maintaining high-level security due to a heightened threat environment.”

Homan further explained that he is coordinating with “the TSA administrator and the ICE director to assess the specific needs of each airport.”

The push to restore pay follows an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on Friday, directing preexisting funds to cover TSA salaries. Payments could begin as early as Monday or Tuesday.

The temporary funding solution comes after prolonged staffing shortages sparked long security lines at major airports. Congressional Democrats in both the House and Senate continue to block full funding, a move expected to extend both the stalemate and travel delays.

Negotiations to end the partial government shutdown remained stalled on Monday, marking its 45th day and making it the longest in U.S. history.

Democrats in Congress are pushing for substantial reforms to ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), while Trump maintains that any funding agreement must include the SAVE America Act, introduced in January 2025, which requires proof of U.S. citizenship for federal voter registration.

The president has also urged Republicans to remove the Senate filibuster rule, allowing funding legislation to pass without the standard 60-vote threshold.
