Jordan Denounces Israeli Law Imposing Death Penalty on Palestinians
Ambassador Fouad Majali, spokesperson for Jordan’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Jordan rejects the law, labeling it a “racist, discriminatory and illegitimate” measure.
He added that the legislation contravenes international legal principles, which forbid an occupying power from exercising authority over occupied territory through unilateral enactments.
Majali further described the law as part of a broader, systematic Israeli policy aimed at the Palestinian people and their fundamental rights, including the right to self-determination and the creation of an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian land under a two-state solution framework.
He urged the international community to take swift action to prevent Israel from enforcing the law and to halt what he termed illegal Israeli legislation and unilateral measures targeting the Palestinian population and their presence in their homeland.
Earlier on Monday, Israel’s parliament approved the law in its second and third readings by 62 votes to 48, as stated by reports. The legislation grants Israeli courts the authority to impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voting in favor of the measure.
