Constitutional Court Confirms Nguesso’s Fifth Term in Congo
As stated by reports, Nguesso secured 94.90% of the votes, defeating six challengers, according to a statement from Auguste Iloki, the court’s president. The court rejected a petition from candidate Dave Mafoula, who sought to annul the March 15 election citing alleged irregularities.
The provisional results released by Interior Minister Raymond Mboulou on March 17 showed a slightly different figure of 94.82%. Approximately 2.6 million citizens voted, representing a turnout of over 85%.
Following the court’s validation, the 82-year-old Nguesso is scheduled to be inaugurated for his new term on April 16. Two major opposition candidates had boycotted the election, alleging unfair practices.
Nguesso first assumed power in 1979, lost the 1992 election and went into exile in France, before returning in 1997 to seize control in an armed uprising that ousted former Prime Minister Pascal Lissouba. Since then, he has maintained a dominant position in Congolese politics. Running on the Congolese Party of Labor ticket, this marks his fifth consecutive term, after previous victories in 2002, 2009, 2016, and 2021, following 2015 constitutional changes that reset term limits and removed the presidential age cap.
