Strike on PMF Headquarters in Anbar Claims Senior Commander
In a statement shared on Facebook, the group declared: “The Popular Mobilization Forces mourn a group of heroic fighters who were killed alongside the Anbar Operations commander in the PMF, the martyred commander Dr. Saad Duwai, as a result of a treacherous US targeting that struck the operations headquarters,” emphasizing the loss of both rank-and-file members and senior leadership.
The PMF functions as a formal Iraqi security framework formed in 2014 after a religious decree issued by leading cleric Ali al-Sistani, calling for resistance against the ISIS (Daesh) militant organization. It was subsequently incorporated into Iraq’s official armed forces through a governmental decision in 2016.
The latest strikes against the group—causing numerous fatalities and injuries among its ranks—occur in the context of the continuing conflict initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran since Feb. 28, further intensifying instability across the region.
