Kim Yo Jong Gains Key Party Role in North Korea
The promotion was decided Monday during the first plenary meeting of the ninth central committee of the party, as stated by state media. Kim was also reinstated as an alternate member of the central committee’s political bureau after a five-year absence.
State media did not specify which department she will lead, but she is widely expected to continue managing inter-Korean affairs. South Korea’s Unification Ministry said it is closely watching whether she will take on a larger role in dealings with Seoul or in shaping external strategy, according to reports.
The plenary session, chaired by Kim Jong Un, also elected top leadership bodies including the Political Bureau, Secretariat, and Central Military Commission, while beginning discussions on a new five-year policy plan.
Kim Jong Un told attendees that the newly elected leadership carries a “heavy and sacred duty” to fulfill the goals outlined by the latest party congress. He acknowledged that the next five years could present challenging internal and external conditions, but stressed the importance of maintaining strategic initiatives, strengthening state power, and improving living standards.
