Van Rootselaar killed her mother and half-brother on February 10 before opening fire at a secondary school, killing five students and an educational assistant, and subsequently taking her own life.
OpenAI confirmed it contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after the attack and said senior leaders will travel to Ottawa to meet officials regarding safety measures and reporting thresholds. Minister Solomon stated he was “deeply disturbed” and requested a briefing on the company’s escalation policies, noting that regulation of AI chatbots remains under consideration.
