Russia, South Africa Explore Options for Resolving Ukraine Conflict

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa held a phone conversation on Tuesday to discuss potential avenues for resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to reports.

“The situation in Ukraine was touched upon. Cyril Ramaphosa expressed support for Russia's efforts aimed at a political and diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

South Africa’s presidency also noted on social media platform X that Putin briefed Ramaphosa on Russia’s perspective and commitment to a diplomatic solution, reiterating Pretoria’s backing for peaceful negotiations to end the war. “This is in line with South Africa’s long-stated position during talks with both sides that all wars end through negotiations,” the statement said.

South Africa has previously offered to mediate in the ongoing conflict, which is entering its fifth year later this month. The two leaders pledged to support efforts to return South African nationals fighting alongside Russian forces, with joint teams continuing to finalize the process.

Additionally, Putin and Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination between their countries, including cooperation within the G20 and BRICS forums. They also discussed enhancing bilateral economic relations, with Ramaphosa welcoming talks aimed at establishing a mutually beneficial trade and investment framework within the Russia–South Africa comprehensive strategic partnership.
