Terror Attack on Nigerian Market Kills at Least Thirteen

(MENAFN) At least 13 people were killed on Friday in a terror attack on a community market in Benue State, north-central Nigeria, according to reports.

The assault targeted Anwase Market in Mbaikyor, Kwande Local Government Area, where attackers also abducted women and set market stalls on fire. Ibi Andrew, an aide to the local government chairman, said the assailants struck during peak market hours, causing panic among traders and residents.

He added that council chairman Vitalis Neji, in coordination with security agencies, has moved to the area to restore order and prevent further violence.

A witness, identified as Peter, said the attackers emerged from a nearby mountain, firing sporadically into the air before igniting parts of the market.

The incident comes just two days after another attack in the Abande community of Kwande Local Government Area that killed at least 17 people, highlighting growing concerns over escalating insecurity in the region. Residents have repeatedly called on state and federal authorities to strengthen security and protect rural communities from recurring attacks.
