Trump Voices Support for Canada's China Trade Ties

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump expressed unexpected support Friday for Canada's deepening commercial ties with Beijing, even as tensions between Washington and Ottawa reach new heights.

When questioned about trade agreements secured by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during his four-day China trip, Trump responded, "That's what they should be doing."

"If you could get a deal with China, you should do that," he added.

Carney's official Beijing visit—the first by a Canadian prime minister in eight years—represents Ottawa's strategic push to diversify away from overwhelming dependence on American markets.

Relations between the North American neighbors have deteriorated sharply since Trump began his second presidential term. The administration has imposed tariffs reaching 35% on Canadian goods while Trump has provocatively referred to Ottawa as the 51st US state.

Carney has publicly committed to doubling Canada's non-American exports within the next decade.

The China visit yielded concrete results. A joint statement released during Carney's trip revealed Canada will permit up to 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EV) into the Canadian market, applying a most-favoured-nation tariff rate of 6.1%.

In exchange, Beijing agreed to slash tariffs on Canadian canola seed to approximately 15% combined rate by March.

"To build on this momentum, Canada has set an ambitious goal to increase exports to China by 50% by 2030," the statement also said.
