Merz Warns U.S. Pivoting from Rules-Based International Order

(MENAFN) Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz issued a stark warning Friday that U.S. is abandoning multilateral norms in favor of raw power dynamics, calling on Europe to stand firm rather than retreat.

Speaking at a Christian Democratic Union (CDU) gathering in Heddesheim, Merz declared that Washington—despite remaining Europe's primary ally—is shifting away from established international frameworks.

"We are experiencing that our most important ally in the world – and that is still the United States of America – is turning away from a rules-based order," Merz told attendees.

The German leader noted America's trajectory is abandoning respect for international law, instead moving "towards a purely power- and interest-led politics."

Merz stressed that European nations must reject passivity in this new geopolitical landscape, cautioning against retreating into irrelevance. He warned that Europe cannot afford to "bury our heads in the sand" or seek safety in marginal positions—strategies he characterized as doomed to fail.

Regarding relations with US President Donald Trump's administration, Merz acknowledged that opposition alone achieves nothing when Washington remains committed to its direction.

"But they (Americans) will not look at us if we make ourselves small, if we duck away, but they will only respect us if we have alliance partners in Europe who speak the same language as us," he stated.

On Germany's economic challenges, Merz emphasized protecting the nation's manufacturing sector remains critical, asserting the solution to these problems lies "in our hand."
