Trump Takes Credit After Iran’s Denial of Protester Death Sentence
Taking to Truth Social, Trump posted: "FoxNews: 'Iranian protester will no longer be sentenced to death after President Trump's warnings. Likewise others.' This is good news. Hopefully, it will continue!"
Iran's judicial authorities moved swiftly Thursday to counter media narratives claiming a demonstrator had been condemned to death for participating in the nationwide protests currently gripping the Islamic Republic.
The judiciary's official media center branded the reports as "fabricated," clarifying that Erfan Soltani, 26, was apprehended on Jan. 10 and now confronts allegations of "gathering and conspiring against national security and propaganda activities."
Soltani remains detained at a facility in Karaj, located on Tehran's periphery, according to judicial officials.
Authorities emphasized that the charges currently leveled against Soltani carry prison terms under Iranian statutes, explicitly stating the death penalty does not apply to such offenses. Any sentencing would require prosecutorial confirmation of charges followed by a court verdict.
Days earlier, Trump had issued stark warnings to media, declaring Washington would implement "very strong action" should Iranian authorities execute demonstrators.
The civil unrest—fueled by deteriorating economic circumstances—erupted in Tehran in late December before cascading across multiple Iranian cities in recent days.
Iranian leadership has pushed back against the protests, characterizing them as "riots" and "terrorism" while accusing both the US and Israel of orchestrating the upheaval.
