Market armed attack in Nigeria’s Niger state rises to fifty

(MENAFN) The number of people killed in an armed assault on a marketplace in Nigeria’s Niger state has climbed to 50, according to reports released on Sunday.

The attack took place on Saturday when gunmen raided the Kasuwan Daji market in the village of Demo. The assailants fired randomly at civilians, seized several individuals, and made off with food items from the market.

Victims of the attack were laid to rest in a mass burial ceremony, while those who survived with injuries were transported to nearby medical facilities for care.

Nigeria’s president denounced the violence and directed security agencies to track down those responsible. “They are testing the resolve of our nation and must face the full consequences of their criminal actions,” he said. He also ordered an immediate effort to locate and free everyone who was taken during the raid.

Niger state has seen a surge in violent attacks in recent weeks, particularly in remote rural areas that are frequently targeted by armed groups operating out of forest regions.

In one of the most serious incidents last year, gunmen abducted 315 people — including 303 students and 12 teachers — from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, within Agwara Local Government Area, on Nov. 21. About 50 students managed to escape within the first day and were reunited with their families, while authorities later facilitated the release of another 100 captives.

On Dec. 21, officials announced that all remaining abducted students had been successfully freed.
