Zelenskyy Signals Openness to Referendum on Peace Plan
Speaking in an interview with a media outlet, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that his objective is to bargain from a "strong" stance when it comes to borders and land. However, he acknowledged that if more favorable terms cannot be achieved, he is ready to ask the public to decide on the outcome.
Zelenskyy also underlined that for any countrywide referendum to be considered legitimate, a halt in fighting lasting no less than 60 days would be necessary. He characterized this period as the "minimum" amount of time required to safely arrange the voting process and manage logistical challenges.
He cautioned that without a stable ceasefire, security risks would likely reduce voter participation, which could undermine the credibility of the referendum’s results.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking U.S. official said that Russia recognizes the importance of a ceasefire to facilitate such a vote. Nonetheless, Moscow is reportedly pushing for a shorter schedule than the two-month pause sought by Kyiv, according to the media outlet.
