Over Forty Reported Dead in Morocco Flash Floods
The Atlantic coastal province of Safi bore the brunt of the catastrophe, where local authorities reported 37 fatalities in an official statement. Another 14 survivors are currently undergoing medical treatment at area hospitals.
In Morocco's southern Tinghir province, four additional victims perished when raging floodwaters engulfed their vehicle, flipping it into a river along the Fezou-El Hafira corridor, according to a local outlet.
Officials attribute the Safi flooding to severe thunderstorms that unleashed their fury in approximately one hour, according to the statement.
The deluge submerged dozens of residential properties and commercial establishments throughout Safi city. Powerful torrents overturned numerous vehicles or carried them away entirely, while critical roadway infrastructure sustained significant damage, triggering extensive traffic chaos across the region.
Moroccan officials have issued warnings that additional precipitation is forecast for upcoming days. In response, authorities shuttered schools across four provinces Monday and mobilized large-scale emergency response operations.
