US Treasury removes sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court judge

(MENAFN) The US Treasury Department announced Friday that it has lifted sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, several months after he was initially targeted under the Global Magnitsky program for his involvement in prosecuting former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Moraes was removed from the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list in the Treasury’s updated release, which also delisted his wife, Viviane Barci de Moraes, along with the São Paulo-based LEX Instituto de Estudos Jurídicos Ltda., previously sanctioned as an affiliated organization.

The decision follows US moves to ease 50% of tariffs on major Brazilian exports, reversing duties imposed earlier this year in what officials described as efforts to protect Bolsonaro from legal consequences.

The sanctions had been imposed in late July, with the US citing “serious human rights abuse” linked to Moraes’ role in the corruption trial against Bolsonaro, who is now serving a prison sentence exceeding 27 years for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election to President Lula.
