Belgium to acquire Latvian drone interceptors in anti-drone package
The initiative aims to bolster Belgium’s ability to detect, jam, intercept, and neutralize potential threats following recent drone sightings over airports, military bases, and critical infrastructure—incidents Belgian authorities suspect may be linked to Russia, though Moscow denies involvement.
The package includes counter-drone equipment such as jammers, detection systems, anti-drone guns, and Latvian-made “Blaze” interceptors. Launched by Origin Robotics in May, these AI-powered devices are praised for their speed, maneuverability, and accuracy. Specific numbers and overall costs for the units have not been disclosed.
Defense Minister Theo Francken also announced plans for a €500 million ($580 million) long-term strategy to strengthen Belgium’s drone defense capabilities.
