Russia Vows Not to Allow New Arms Race to Begin

(MENAFN) Russia will categorically reject any acceleration of global nuclear competition and insists that atomic-armed nations bear collective responsibility for preserving international stability, Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the Russian Federation Security Council, declared Thursday.

Shoigu flagged alarm over Pentagon signals hinting at potential nuclear weapons testing resumption alongside intensifying military buildups across the European continent, he told a news agency.

"Russia will never allow a new arms race to erupt, no matter how much others may wish it," Shoigu told the news agency, adding that Russia will continue to do everything possible to preserve strategic stability.

As the globe's preeminent nuclear arsenals, Moscow and Washington shoulder an unparalleled burden in safeguarding planetary peace and security, Shoigu argued, urging the United States to honor its commitments under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and pursue constructive engagement aimed at de-escalating atomic tensions.

Shoigu simultaneously condemned Europe's accelerating militarization trajectory and provocative rhetoric emanating from certain Continental leadership, contending such posturing "reflect a loss of historical perspective" and serve exclusively to exacerbate geopolitical friction.

"We are closely monitoring not only hostile statements but also concrete military planning and decision-making within NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the European Union," he said.

Reinforcing the stakes, Shoigu underscored the principle underpinning nuclear restraint: "Peace and security are not the privilege of one bloc. Those who possess the greatest destructive potential must act with the greatest sense of responsibility," he added.
