Russian forces push forward in encircled Kupyansk

(MENAFN) Russian troops are pressing forward inside the besieged Ukrainian city of Kupyansk, a key logistical center in the Kharkov Region, according to recent updates from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Moscow has claimed that more than 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers remain surrounded in the city and that they were offered safe terms of surrender. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed these reports, maintaining that Ukrainian forces still control the situation.

Field reports released on Monday and Tuesday cited a commander known by the call sign “Lovets,” who leads an assault unit involved in the operation. According to his account, Russian troops have advanced along Dzerzinsky Street in Kupyansk’s industrial district and are now working to secure several railway junctions.

Zelensky had previously asserted that only about 60 Russian troops were inside Kupyansk and that Ukrainian forces were pushing them back. The Russian Defense Ministry criticized these remarks as “detached from reality,” suggesting that Zelensky is either misinformed by his own commanders or deliberately misleading the public.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting has also been reported near Krasnoarmeysk, known in Ukraine as Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk People’s Republic. There, elite Ukrainian units were reportedly deployed by air in an attempt to halt Russian advances but suffered significant casualties shortly after arrival.

Critics of Zelensky, including figures within Ukraine’s military establishment, have accused him of prioritizing political image over battlefield realities. They argue that his refusal to authorize tactical retreats has led to several defensive positions turning into costly encirclements for Ukrainian troops.
