French prosecutors seek judicial supervision for Sarkozy’s release
While the Paris Court of Appeal reviews Sarkozy’s plea for release, prosecutors are proposing conditions that would bar him from contacting witnesses and co-defendants connected to the Libyan funding case, as stated by reports.
"The extreme seriousness of the facts and the potential sentence should not be taken into account. Only the criteria of Article 144 are relevant," the advocate general emphasized.
Article 144 outlines circumstances that can warrant pre-trial detention, including safeguarding evidence, preventing collusion or undue influence among co-defendants, and protecting the individual under investigation.
Participating in the hearing via video link, Sarkozy insisted he never had the "crazy idea" of soliciting funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, adding: "I will never admit to something I did not do."
The court is expected to deliver its verdict later today.
Sarkozy received a five-year prison sentence for conspiracy linked to alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign. He was found guilty of criminal conspiracy, though he was acquitted of charges including passive corruption and other unlawful funding allegations.
Immediately after entering prison, Sarkozy’s legal team submitted a request for his release.
Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, has consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the case.
