Trump Administration Explores Immigrant Detention Centers
Since assuming office in January, Trump has initiated an extensive campaign against illegal immigration.
He has promised what he calls the largest deportation operation in American history, asserting that roughly 25 million people entered the United States unlawfully before he returned to office earlier this year.
These warehouses could be repurposed into what a Department of Homeland Security official described as “mega detention centers,” which are expected to be situated near airports in southern states, where deportation activities are most frequent.
The official indicated that this strategy would help “increase efficiency” in deportations.
According to the news agency, several of the warehouses under consideration were originally built for Amazon but were never utilized by the company.
Their sizes range from 600,000 square feet to several million square feet. By comparison, current facilities used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are considerably smaller.
For instance, one facility in Tacoma, Washington, covers 277,000 square feet, another in El Paso, Texas, occupies 153,000 square feet, and a Florida location provides 158,000 square feet of housing, the news agency reported.
A White House official told the news agency that ICE intends to finance the conversion using funds from the recently approved spending bill, which increased the budget for immigrant detention by $45 billion over the next three years.
