Spain Blocks US Military Shipments to Israel
(MENAFN) Spain has officially barred the passage of U.S. military planes and ships transporting weapons, ammunition, or military gear intended for Israel through its Rota (Cádiz) and Morón de la Frontera (Seville) bases.
This decision was verified by sources knowledgeable about the operations of the US-Spain Joint Committee.
“Rota and Moron are not a backdoor,” emphasized the anonymous sources, according to a report by a news agency.
These sources underscored that both installations are sovereign Spanish bases, managed under Spanish authority, and any military activities conducted there require explicit approval from Madrid.
This policy shift coincides with ongoing military support from Washington to Israel, which has relied heavily on U.S. arms during its military campaign in Gaza — a conflict that has resulted in over 66,000 deaths.
While Spanish authorities have kept a cautious tone in public discourse, they have reaffirmed that Spain must honor its defense agreement with the United States.
However, they also noted that sensitive transfers, particularly those related to Israeli-bound weaponry, are subject to strict limitations.
Though Spain does not carry out direct inspections of American cargo, officials argue that attempts to disguise such shipments would jeopardize mutual trust between the two nations.
Officials also mentioned the logistical challenges of hiding arms transfers, especially given the substantial scale of deliveries heading to Israel.
