Russia to partake in Summer Games in LA
(MENAFN) Russia is making plans to compete with a complete delegation at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, according to the country’s sports officials.
After years of restrictions linked to the Ukraine conflict, Russian athletes have been slowly rejoining international competitions, following guidance from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued in early 2022.
“We are preparing to take part in the 2028 Olympic Games with a full roster,” Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov said during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
He also noted, “We will hold the second summer ‘Spartakiad’ with the strongest athletes,” describing the event as “our domestic qualifying competitions for the Olympics.”
Degtyaryov added that Russia “will start looking at all the candidates” for the Games during next year’s national tournament.
The minister has repeatedly criticized what he has called “discrimination” against Russian athletes, who in many cases have been forced to compete under a neutral banner rather than their national flag.
In August, Russia’s swimming team earned 18 medals at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore — their first appearance at the competition since 2016 due to IOC restrictions. Despite competing under a neutral flag, they claimed six gold medals and ranked fourth overall in the medal standings.
