Axiom-4 Blasts Off with Astronauts from Four Nations
At precisely 0631 GMT, the spacecraft ascended, carrying crew members representing India, Hungary, Poland, and the United States, as confirmed by NASA.
The team is set to dock with the ISS by Thursday, according to an official statement posted by NASA on X.
After initial setbacks caused by technical glitches and adverse weather, the mission now advances a historic milestone for India: Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is poised to become the country’s first astronaut to set foot on the ISS.
“Group Captain Shukla is on the way to become the first Indian to go to the International Space Station,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, celebrating the launch.
Commanding the mission is Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut who now serves as the director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space.
The mission specialists include European Space Agency astronaut Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.
SpaceX reports that during their stay on the ISS, the crew will undertake over 60 scientific experiments and technology demonstrations. Their research will span human health, Earth observation, biological studies, and material science investigations.
