Floods in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Claim One Hundred Lives
The devastating floods, which hit the region earlier this month, have led to significant fatalities, widespread disruption of livelihoods, and extensive damage to infrastructure.
“The Eastern Cape provincial government stated, ‘As per the latest report, 94 bodies have been positively identified and handed over to their families, while processes are ongoing to identify the six remaining bodies.’”
Among the deceased, 63 are adults and 37 are children, including 22 school learners, with OR Tambo District, the hardest-hit area, accounting for 76 of the deaths.
“The numbers are likely to increase, as there are individuals that are still reported missing by their families and next of kin, and search operations persist in the affected areas,” the government added.
In OR Tambo District, officials report that water services have been restored to 95 percent of the impacted zones, although some locations remain without running water and rely on water tankers.
The provincial government reassured residents that teams have been working tirelessly to repair infrastructure, stabilize conditions, and provide clean water access throughout the affected communities.
“The government remains committed to accelerating recovery programs and ensuring that displaced and affected communities receive the assistance they need to rebuild their lives,” the statement concluded.
